When the peacock has presented his back, the spectator will usually begin to walk around him to get a front view; but the peacock will continue to turn so that no front view is possible. The thing to do then is to stand still and wait until it pleases him to turn. When it suits him, the peacock will face you. Then you will see in a green-bronze arch around him a galaxy of gazing haloed suns. This is the moment when most people are silent.

Essay of the week was without a doubt Living with a Peacock by the great Flannery O’Connor, originally published in Holiday magazine in September 1961. I’d heard about Flannery’s peacocks before but had no idea she was such a pavonomane. Thanks to Jay for the tip!

    These posts are always compiled the day (or days) before they go public so I wasn’t going to wait around for any new “jokes”. And I’m pretty tired of the witless nature of 99% of the things. Ian Penman says it all here.

    These posts are often the easiest of all, so what seems like a lot of effort is really a lazy option. All I do is bookmark things I’ve seen throughout the week then compile a list. As well as being a labour-saving device they have the advantage of being a useful resource for interesting things I’ve spotted, rather like Instapaper and other services but with everything stored here.

    Too true but the Edible Book Festival one is actually real. Interesting concept having edible literature. Is there a Patron Saint of Gluttony?
    It is good to look forward to a post from you every day and your Weekend links ones are usually extra interesting.
