Fahey didn’t make many new friends with his scything dismissal of the folk revival. He distrusted the way that folkies regarded music as a carrier for the correct political messages of the moment. As Lowenthal puts it: “To him, the student idealists had naïve worldviews and dreamed of unrealistic political utopias,” whereas Fahey “attempted to channel darkness and dread through his music.” For Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger devotees, the ideological message came first, with musical tone or trickery a distant second. As Fahey saw it, the dizzyingly strange source music they borrowed from and then built their careers on emerged as little more than a scrubbed-up ventriloquist’s doll, all the coarse grain and troubling metaphysic of its original voices jettisoned. He also detected high condescension and low reverse racism in how the folk-revival people preferred their old blues guys barefoot and wearing dungarees—even if they now usually dressed in sharp suits and often preferred to play amplified, electric urban blues.

    Always glad for the weekend round-up, John. Especially good is the Penman appreciation of John Fahey. I had occasion to correspond with Penman during our shared time as writers for The Wire. Both he and I had special fondness for Jack Nitzsche’s music. Penman nailed the godhead of a cult with this forever endearing quip: “Eno has become the Keith Richards of ambient, which is to say: Great reputation, but the last thirty years…what?”

    Always fun to peruse the weekend links. btw, just in case you hadn’t looked, the “Shortwave Radio World” site you link above has some seldom seen Soviet radio-related graphics in the “Soviet Radio History in Pictures” sections. Great browsing b/c these aren’t the usual Soviet sources we’ve seen dozens of times by now (great as they are). Soviet Mid-Century.

    Hi Richard. I chat now and then with IP on Twitter which is where that link originated. I’ve used to enjoy his film columns in the NME, and I read The Wire too, of course. Re: Eno, Penman’s review of Small Craft… was harsh but unfortunately accurate. The ambient works get played a lot here (Lux included) but Small Craft… was a serious finger-burn that put me off buying any other recent things.

    JRM: your comment got flagged as spam for some reason, good job I spotted it. I also saw the Soviet stuff on that site but thought I’d link to the index rather than single out a specific post. I love sites that devote themselves to mining a narrow seam of history.

    Lady Raglan’s single article appeared three years later, in the journal Folklore [...] and it almost certainly had a more lasting influence than anything written by her husband.

    Raglan’s essay directly inspired the entirety of Joseph Campbell’s oeuvre, and Livingstone denies that he had any lasting influence? Really?
