In evolutionary terms, the intelligence of octopuses is an anomaly. The last common ancestor between octopuses on the one hand, and humans and other intelligent animals (monkeys, dolphins, dogs, crows) on the other, was probably a primitive, blind worm-like creature that existed six hundred million years ago. Other creatures that are so evolutionarily distant from humans—lobsters, snails, slugs, clams—rate pretty low on the cognitive scale. But octopuses—and to some extent their cephalopod cousins, cuttlefish and squid—frustrate the neat evolutionary division between clever vertebrates and simple-minded invertebrates. They are sophisticated problem solvers; they learn, and can use tools; and they show a capacity for mimicry, deception and, some think, humour. Just how refined their abilities are is a matter of scientific debate: their very strangeness makes octopuses hard to study. Their intelligence is like ours, and utterly unlike ours. Octopuses are the closest we can come, on earth, to knowing what it might be like to encounter intelligent aliens.

    House by the Canal is on display at the excellent Harris Gallery and Museum in Preston. Free entry, and the gallery building is as fascinating as the Newton painting itself. Well worth a visit.

    Thanks, I’ve been to the Harris a couple of times. I saw Dalí’s Autumnal Cannibalism there when it was on tour.

    The Guardian is being ever so helpful for all potential offendees of the Dali/Duchamp exhibit. “Exhibits that could cause offence…” Step up folks and take a number! No matter which way the political winds are blowing, the impulse to fastidiousness and Puritanism must be opposed with complete enthusiasm.

    John thanks for The Mystic Umbrellas recommendation! I listened to it once and immediately downloaded it. I’ve always been a total immersion listener and frequently listen to one thing over and over for days. Creates a mood its hard to let go of.

    Not mentioned in the Tobe Hooper sample list but unearthed for Cherry Red’s excellent minimal electronics compilation Close to the Noise Floor, is Malcolm Brown’s 1983-ish track Sedation Strokes which contains a sample of Teri McMinn’s blood-curdling meathook scream from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre which brilliantly mutates into a blast of free jazz…

    Stephen: Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed the Mystic Umbrellas. People who read these posts are pretty much the target audience.

    Wes: Who Sampled is littered with omissions. That scream is one I’d missed despite having a copy of the compilation in question. I think they’d missed some others as well, I’m sure there’s at least one more piece that samples the strange grinding noise from the beginning of TCM.
