• The Quietus continues to be essential reading: John Doran talks to Richard H Kirk about Cabaret Voltaire | Sarah Angliss, musician and inventor of music machines, talks to Stuart Huggett | “…the most overt literary lodestar for The Art Of Falling Apart is John Rechy, trailblazing chronicler of the gay underbelly of hustlers and queens zig-zagging across America, and author of Numbers, the book from which Soft Cell’s song takes its name.” Matthew Lindsay looks back at Soft Cell’s second (and best) album.

• “The English have something of a tradition where they like to scare you out of your mind at Christmas, a kind of sobering up of the senses by forces that seem to be beyond them.” Colin Fleming on The Signal-Man by Charles Dickens.     Oh, I approve, I bought that when it came out. I was actually a little disappointed since I look forward to The Wire’s no. 1 choice being something I missed.

    My own album of the year (of the very limited number I’ve heard) would be the Goldfrapp one, I think it’s their best to date. But there’s a lot in the end-of-year lists I still haven’t heard; in January I’m usually playing catch-up.

    My favorite relatively recent discoveries amongst Great Britain’s neck of the underground; White Medal, Hateful Abandon, and The Art of Burning Water. Technically Cape of Bats should get a mention as well since half of them are Irish, the other half are Stateside.

    Again, more abrasive stuff. I’ll leave the ethereal music to you since every time I suggest a band of said nature to you, you shoot back with something that makes them sound like shit. Though Hateful Abandon could actually go either way because they’re one of a handful of black metal bands who’ve gone wispy deathrock / post-punk.

    Obviously not christmas music either.
