Technically speaking, not his first ambient work, since the mighty Metal Machine Music is certainly ambient given the way it immerses the listener in 64 minutes of total noise. When you’ve been that far out, why not go in the opposite direction?
We are pleased to announce plans for the release of Lou Reed’s first ever album of non-vocal electronic music for meditation, Body work, and Tai Chi. This album Hudson River Wind Meditations, will be released by Sounds True Records on April 1st, 2007 (www.soundstrue.com). Go to Lou Reed’s official myspace (www.myspace.com/officialloureed) and stream Wind Coda, a new track from this forthcoming Lou Reed album.
Thanks to Eroom Nala for the tip.

Wish I still had my copy of Metal Machine Music on CD. A good way to get rid of unwanted guests is to play it full blast towards the end of an overlong party.

“My week beats you year” – Lou
My good friend Gav and I used to have a stock list of house-clearing albums, mostly Throbbing Gristle and Nurse With Wound. Gav had a copy of MMM but I don’t remember ever forcing it on anyone. It’s still a challenge for people today though, one of those great musical singularities like John Cage’s 4′ 22″ and La Monte Young’s Drift Studies.
He’s put a 1 minute 32 second sample of it on his Between Thought and Expression The Lou Reed Anthology collection so I suppose you could have that on constant repeat to try and clear people out.

It’s also got Little Sister on it too. Which I would guess is otherwise only available on the Get Crazy soundtrack. Also probably your only chance to hear Malcolm McDowell singing.

I’m giving Hudson River a listen, right now. If you wanna hear ambient music from a master who has been working for years developing interesting, expressive music, give Steve Roach a listen. Not as room clearable as Lou, because it has a certain something that makes you wanna listen again and again.

Steve Roach is one of the very great artists of ambient atmospheric music. Also, take a listen to Max Corbacho, similar to Steve Roach, but with his distinctive personal touch. Anything from him, Ars Lucis, The Talisman, BreathStream, etc, is a pure gem. Visit the followin link where you can listen to most of the tracks as MP3 samples :
