The activist’s whole identity is tied up in him being denied, as opposed to him manifesting. Nobody can give you your freedom. You ARE free. It is your natural state, okay? You can give it all away if you want, but: no. I can’t GIVE you your rights. I can’t give you your freedom. And to go and beg the Man for your rights and BEG the Man for your freedom? LIVE your freedom.
One of Berg’s phrases was “life actor.” “Theatre of the streets.” All of this as theatre. As opposed to in a different arena you would call politics or activism or so on. But using theatre as a way to open doors that might not be opened if someone was approaching it in other ways. Out of that comes this whole sense of “create the reality you want to live in.” Which is a powerful, profound concept. People are trapped in the paradigm: you can’t even think there is an outside of the box. Just that notion of thinking, and living outside that paradigm, was real powerful stuff.

I read that edition of “The Butterfly Kid” in 1967.
One of those books that should always have the cover it was first published with.
I’ve still got “The Butterfly Kid” and “Unicorn Girl” with their original covers but sadly waylaid “The Probability Pad” at some point so had to replace it with a more recent edition. I found them highly amusing back in the day and fancy that the author of “John Dies At The End” must have read them at some point.
There was an amusing (and slightly macabre) detail in the Pathe clip about Binder, Edwards and Vaughn’s car embellishment shenanigans on the Sweet Jane blog . As they’re wheeling the psychedelicised AC Cobra out through the front of Groovy Bob’s gallery, the narrator, noting that they’re works of art on wheels, exclaims: “Watch out for the sound of crashing canvas!”. Bearing in mind that the car belonged to Tara Guinness, who famously ‘blew his mind out in a car’, the comment is oddly prescient. I also remember seeing the Buick being painted at the start of the clip is depicted full of Kinks on the cover of the 1967 Marble Arch records “Sunny Afternoon” compilation. Funnily enough, the Pop Art room in the same article looks like our living room…
I thought the Sweet Jane post might have mentioned the Beatles connection. I seem to recall a painted car being on display at the Summer of Love exhibition at Tate Liverpool. I don’t think I hallucinated it, anyway.
I’ve still not read Anderson’s novel. I vacillate between either shelling out for an original pb or getting the Dover reprint with the boring cover.
That was an excellent exhibition; we travelled up from Kent with some friends to see
it. I was particularly taken with the tinsel curtain, strobe light and madly psychedelic floor chamber for dancing in and Mati Klarwein’s Aleph Sanctuary. Well, those and all the rest of it of course.
