Kim Leslie’s Sussex: Tales of the Unexpected has a chapter on several places in Sussex that have washed away, including Middleton, Charlton, and Cudlow. The book is based on Leslie’s articles from the West Sussex Gazette, and has lots of weird and interesting bits of history about Sussex (where my partner’s parents live).

A fascinating and rather creepy part of the country, it makes sense that MR James set some of his ghost stories there.

In a related vein, there’s this 1975 folk rock piece from Stone Angel.
