{"id":9898,"date":"2011-09-07T03:23:38","date_gmt":"2011-09-07T02:23:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=9898"},"modified":"2011-09-07T03:23:38","modified_gmt":"2011-09-07T02:23:38","slug":"joseph-balthazar-silvestres-alphabet-album","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2011\/09\/07\/joseph-balthazar-silvestres-alphabet-album\/","title":{"rendered":"Joseph Balthazar Silvestre&#8217;s Alphabet-album"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/silvestre01.jpg\" alt=\"silvestre01.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Monsieur Silvestre&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archive.org\/details\/alphabetalbumcol00silv\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Alphabet-album<\/em><\/a>, a collection of decorative alphabets, has a lengthy subtitle\u2014<em>Collection de Soixante Feuilles d&#8217;Alphabets Histori\u00e9s et Fleuronn\u00e9s, tir\u00e9s des Principales Biblioth\u00e8ques de l&#8217;Europe<\/em>\u2014and is a good example of how the 19th century, always characterised as a period of over-elaborate decoration, contains the seeds of 20th-century design. Silvestre&#8217;s book dates from 1843 yet contains several examples of sans serif or rectilinear lettering which wouldn&#8217;t have looked out of place a hundred years later.
