Many of these are views of the western states of the USA from a time when photographers were documenting the vanishing world of Native American tribes. A couple of pictures in the series by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mopa1\/sets\/72157626847251537\/with\/5711512090\/\" target=\"_blank\">Edward Sheriff Curtis<\/a> would work as cover illustrations for Cormac McCarthy&#8217;s <em>Blood Meridian<\/em>, while the results of a gunshot injury below is the kind of thing you never see in Westerns.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/mopa1\/5711518004\/sizes\/l\/in\/photostream\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/west2.jpg\" alt=\"west2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Untitled (1910) by Richard Throssel.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And speaking of McCarthy&#8217;s baleful masterpiece, William Gibson recently recounted his first experience of reading the book on a journey to Berlin. &#8220;I awoke from it as from some terribly potent dream, and found myself, quite unexpectedly, in a strange city,&#8221; he says.
