Following my mention yesterday of the Cocteau-derived lantern-arms in Francis Coppola&#8217;s <em>Dracula<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/jescie.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jescie<\/a> sent me an abandoned blog post which collected similar examples of the arms-through-the-walls motif. I&#8217;ve done this kind of thing here in the past so it&#8217;s good {feuilleton} material. Almost all these examples are fantasy- and horror-related which isn&#8217;t too surprising, and I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;ll be other examples in films I haven&#8217;t seen. If anyone has any suggestions just remember that hands grasping through doors and windows don&#8217;t count with this, it&#8217;s through the wall or not at all.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/hands1.jpg\" alt=\"hands1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0038348\/\" target=\"_blank\">La Belle et la B\u00eate<\/a> (1946).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jean Cocteau sets things off in 1946, a perfect piece of fairytale Surrealism and one of the many memorable aspects of this film.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/hands2.jpg\" alt=\"hands2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>La Belle et la B\u00eate (1946).<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><!--more--><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/hands10.jpg\" alt=\"hands10.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0056112\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jack the Giant Killer<\/a> (1962).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One I almost forgot, a Ray Harryhausen-like adventure which is pretty good as I recall although I&#8217;ve not seen it for years. IMDB says there&#8217;s a remake on the way.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/hands3.jpg\" alt=\"hands3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0059646\/\" target=\"_blank\">Repulsion<\/a> (1965).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Roman Polanski&#8217;s classic of mental disturbance in a London flat.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/hands4.jpg\" alt=\"hands4.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Ultravox-The-Thin-Wall\/master\/5541\" target=\"_blank\">The Thin Wall<\/a> (1981) by Ultravox: 12&#8243; sleeve.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One I wouldn&#8217;t have known about without Jescie&#8217;s suggestion. I had the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Ultravox-Rage-In-Eden\/master\/5516\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Rage in Eden<\/em><\/a> album from which this single is taken but don&#8217;t remember the song at all, probably because I disliked the band by this point; Ultravox and I part company at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Ultravox-Vienna\/master\/4983\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Vienna<\/em><\/a>. The design for this, as with the band&#8217;s other sleeves of this period, was by Peter Saville.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/hands5.jpg\" alt=\"hands5.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The Thin Wall (1981) by Ultravox: 7&#8243; sleeve.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/hands6.jpg\" alt=\"hands6.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0088993\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Day of the Dead<\/a> (1985).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I think this was the last George Romero film I watched, it&#8217;s certainly one of the last zombie films I watched having lost my patience in recent years with the entire sub-genre of shambling corpses.
