Smith made the first version in 1957 then tinkered with it for the next five years. If its effects seem rather primitive today it should be borne in mind that Smith was a pioneer of this kind of cinema which predates the more familiar work of Terry Gilliam and others by a decade. Also at Ubuweb there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubu.com\/film\/smith_abstractions.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Early Abstractions<\/em><\/a> (1941\u20131957) and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubu.com\/film\/smith_late.html\" target=\"_blank\">Late Superimpositions<\/a><\/em> (1964).<\/p>\n<p>In addition to filmmaking Harry Smith was (among other things) an artist, ethnologist and the compiler of the landmark <a href=\"http:\/\/www.folkways.si.edu\/albumdetails.aspx?itemid=2426\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Anthology of American Folk Music<\/em><\/a>.
