{"id":8464,"date":"2010-12-19T01:44:37","date_gmt":"2010-12-19T01:44:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=8464"},"modified":"2013-02-03T04:06:11","modified_gmt":"2013-02-03T04:06:11","slug":"weekend-links-41","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2010\/12\/19\/weekend-links-41\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend links 41"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.impawards.com\/1968\/two_thousand_and_one_a_space_odyssey.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"2001.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/2001.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Being an inveterate Kubrickphile I was naturally pleased to hear that some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/geektyrant.com\/news\/2010\/12\/16\/17-lost-mintues-of-2001-a-space-odyssey-have-been-found.html\" target=\"_blank\">excised scenes<\/a> from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0062622\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>2001: A Space Odyssey<\/em><\/a> have survived in a watchable form, even though I&#8217;m often ambivalent about the restoration of such material. While it was good to see at last the missing French compound sequence of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0078788\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Apocalypse Now<\/em><\/a>, for example, that sequence added nothing to the film as a whole and its inclusion was spoiled by music which Coppola used for sentimental reasons. In Kubrick&#8217;s case, there&#8217;s a longer version of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0081505\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Shining<\/em><\/a> which the director allowed to be screened on UK TV in the 1980s but, again, most of the unseen material was incidental and added nothing to the film.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Related: <a href=\"http:\/\/rogerebert.suntimes.com\/apps\/pbcs.dll\/article?AID=\/19680421\/COMMENTARY\/40312115\" target=\"_blank\">Roger Ebert&#8217;s review of <em>2001<\/em><\/a> from 1968; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oliviermourgue.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Olivier Mourgue<\/a>, designer of the Djinn chairs seen in the film&#8217;s space Hilton scenes; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/classic\/features\/magnificent-obsession-200201?currentPage=all\" target=\"_blank\">Magnificent obsession<\/a>, a <em>Vanity Fair<\/em> piece from 2002 about the search for the missing scenes from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0035015\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Magnificent Ambersons<\/em><\/a>. Meanwhile, the trailer for Terrence Malick&#8217;s new film, <a href=\"http:\/\/trailers.apple.com\/trailers\/fox_searchlight\/thetreeoflife\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Tree of Life<\/em><\/a>, features some surprising cosmic moments among its scenes of family life.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The separate history [of gay and lesbian artists] has been kind of edited out of art history but in fact art history is very much interwoven with gay or queer history. In a way the two can\u2019t be separated. America doesn\u2019t like anything uncomfortable. I find in my dealings with museums that if I ask a question and the answer is \u2018no,\u2019 they don\u2019t answer. If the answer is \u2018yes,\u2019 I get these amazingly enthusiastic responses. I find it sort of strange sometimes, not being American myself. In a way what they\u2019re doing is editing out the uncomfortable. David Wojnarowicz\u2019s work can make you uncomfortable \u2014 and they\u2019ve edited out that possibility in the show.<\/p>\n<p><em>Canadian artist AA Bronson (see below).<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2022 More on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2010\/12\/03\/ecce-homo-redux\/\" target=\"_self\">Smithsonian versus David Wojnarowicz affair<\/a>: Frank Rich examined the train of events in a comment piece, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/12\/opinion\/12rich.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">Gay Bashing at the Smithsonian<\/a>, for the <em>NYT<\/em>; the Andy Warhol Foundation threatened to <a href=\"http:\/\/warholfoundation.org\/foundation\/35_detail.html?page=1\" target=\"_blank\">withdraw their funding<\/a> for future Smithsonian events unless the work is reinstated, the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation <a href=\"http:\/\/artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/17\/museums-jump-in-to-show-video-removed-by-smithsonian\/\" target=\"_blank\">will be doing the same<\/a>; another artist featured in the National Portrait Gallery exhibition, AA Bronson, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.artinfo.com\/modernartnotes\/2010\/12\/qa-with-aa-bronson-on-hideseek-felix\/\" target=\"_blank\">requested that the gallery withdraw his work<\/a> from the show in protest; <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.artinfo.com\/modernartnotes\/2010\/12\/npg-the-bronson-will-stay-in-the-show\/\" target=\"_blank\">the NPG refused<\/a>, citing a contractual arrangement; among the increasing number of galleries showing support for Wojnarowicz, Tate Modern, London, will host <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tate.org.uk\/modern\/eventseducation\/film\/23150.htm\" target=\"_blank\">an event in January<\/a> which will feature a screening of the contentious video; lastly, there&#8217;s a protest event in New York City today (Sunday, December 19th) at 1.00pm, details <a href=\"http:\/\/artpositive.org\/2010\/12\/protest-in-new-york-city-sunday-december-19th-100-pm\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 More censorship in America: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artinfo.com\/news\/story\/36568\/whitewash-at-moca-jeffrey-deitch-censors-blus-political-street-art-mural\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jeffrey Deitch Censors Blu&#8217;s Political Street Art Mural<\/a>. In the book world, writer Selena Kitt finds her erotic incest stories <a href=\"http:\/\/theselfpublishingrevolution.blogspot.com\/2010\/12\/amazon-in-book-banning-business.html\" target=\"_blank\">removed from Amazon&#8217;s Kindle store<\/a>. Other authors, Jess C Scott and Esmerelda Green, have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2010\/12\/17\/confusion_over_amazon_censorship_policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">had their erotic titles removed from the store<\/a>. Selena Kitt says:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When some of my readers began checking their Kindle archives for books of mine they\u2019d purchased on Amazon, they found them missing from their archives. When one reader called to get a refund for the book she no longer had access to, she was chastised by the Amazon customer service representative about the \u201cseverity\u201d of the book she\u2019d chosen to purchase.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Can you imagine buying a paper book and the bookstore then paying you a visit to forcibly reclaim it?
