As Beardsley-influenced pieces go they&#8217;re rather crude, although it&#8217;s unfair to be too judgemental since there&#8217;s so little of his work available to see online. Following yesterday&#8217;s post, it&#8217;s inevitable that he produced a Salom\u00e9 picture of his own but there&#8217;s no sign of that, the curiously space-age (or alien) <em>Judith<\/em> above is the closest you&#8217;ll get.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"babberich2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/09\/babberich2.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Introduction to Extaze (1900-01).<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On the strength of these drawings I&#8217;d probably have de Ner\u00e9e down as a post-Beardsley pasticheur similar to <a href=\"http:\/\/coilhouse.net\/2010\/05\/a-decadent-parade-of-outrageous-fancies-alastair\/\" target=\"_blank\">Alastair<\/a> (aka Hans Henning Voigt) but there&#8217;s another side to his output evident in <a href=\"http:\/\/passagenproject.com\/KarelNereetotBabberich.html\" target=\"_blank\">his painted works<\/a> which show a far more assured Symbolist style, with a figurative approach closer to another Dutch artist of the period, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artcyclopedia.com\/artists\/toorop_jan.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jan Toorop<\/a>. It&#8217;s a shame the photos there are little more than snapshots, I&#8217;d like to see more of these.
