{"id":7149,"date":"2010-05-06T01:57:39","date_gmt":"2010-05-06T00:57:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=7149"},"modified":"2010-05-06T03:12:48","modified_gmt":"2010-05-06T02:12:48","slug":"into-the-media-web-by-michael-moorcock","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2010\/05\/06\/into-the-media-web-by-michael-moorcock\/","title":{"rendered":"Into the Media Web by Michael Moorcock"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw11.jpg\" alt=\"itmw11.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here at last is the book I spent a good part of last year designing. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Into the Media Web<\/em><\/a> is a huge volume as befits a huge talent, 720 pages of Michael Moorcock&#8217;s non-fiction spanning fifty years of his career from his days writing for sf and fantasy fanzines, through to journalism, reviews and articles for major newspapers and magazines. Moorcock expert John Davey did an amazingly thorough job of compiling, editing and annotating it all, and it&#8217;s been a considerable pleasure to design such an important collection. Alan Moore provided the substantial introduction. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savoy.abel.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Savoy Books<\/a> haven&#8217;t announced a price yet but it&#8217;s going to be about \u00a345 since it&#8217;s another limited edition and weighs a ton. <em>Into the Media Web<\/em> makes a fine companion to last year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tachyonpublications.com\/book\/Best_of_Moorcock.html?Session_ID=new\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Best of Michael Moorcock<\/em><\/a> from Tachyon, also edited by John Davey (with Ann &amp; Jeff VanderMeer) and whose interior I also designed. Details about <em>Into the Media Web<\/em>&#8216;s design follow below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw12.jpg\" alt=\"itmw12.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The dust jacket is matt white with a spot UV layer which picks out the titles and lines in gloss.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw13.jpg\" alt=\"itmw13.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw_cover.jpg\" alt=\"itmw_cover.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It was the cover design which dictated the look of the interior. The book&#8217;s title comes from a prescient article of Moorcock&#8217;s from the late 1960s concerning the increasingly interrelated nature of modern media. Accompanying this was a small diagram (below) which showed some of the connections Moorcock was discussing.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw9.jpg\" alt=\"itmw9.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Both Savoy and the editor were keen to use a version of this diagram on the cover. Moorcock is known for his writings about London, some of which are reprinted in <em>Into the Media Web<\/em>, so my solution was to combine the diagram with Moorcock&#8217;s London associations and make a play on Harry Beck&#8217;s oft-imitated <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tube_map\" target=\"_blank\">Tube map design<\/a> for London Underground. All the headlines throughout the book are set in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.identifont.com\/show?6T8\" target=\"_blank\">Edward Johnston&#8217;s sans serif typeface<\/a> which was specially developed for the Underground system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw1.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw10.jpg\" alt=\"itmw10.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw2.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw1.jpg\" alt=\"itmw1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Inside the book a grey Tube line begins on the half-title page and snakes its way through the entire volume, marked with the names of writers or locations encountered along the way. For the title spread I created an illustration of the author intended to resemble the tile mosaics one finds on the walls of the Underground stations in the city centre. The starting point was a photo from the mid-Seventies which appeared inside the very first Savoy Moorcock book, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savoy.abel.co.uk\/HTML\/sojan.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Sojan<\/em><\/a> in 1977.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw8.jpg\" alt=\"itmw8.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw3.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw2.jpg\" alt=\"itmw2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The copyright spread with an illustration by Mark Reeve.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw4.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw3.jpg\" alt=\"itmw3.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The contents which run over four pages.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw5.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw4.jpg\" alt=\"itmw4.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw6.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw5.jpg\" alt=\"itmw5.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The opening of Alan Moore&#8217;s introduction with a station on the line for Moore&#8217;s home town of Northampton. This Moorcock map recognises no boundaries; other stations include Gormenghast, London itself and the planet Mars. The line going off the bottom of the page has an arrow pointing to later in the book where Moorcock writes a piece about Alan Moore.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw7.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw6.jpg\" alt=\"itmw6.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The opening of the first article, an autobiographical essay from 1987. Here the stations are some of the places where the author has lived.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/bibliopoesy\/itmw8.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/05\/itmw7.jpg\" alt=\"itmw7.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moorcock writes here about his Deep Fix album from 1975, an apocalyptic concept released in part because of his associations with Hawkwind, hence the band being named as a station. Designer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.barneybubbles.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Barney Bubbles<\/a> was responsible for the cover and his playful approach to graphic design very much inspired my work on <em>Into the Media Web<\/em>.
