As before, <em>Jugend<\/em> was so copiously illustrated that the selection here can only scratch the surface. Anyone wanting to see more of these graphics is advised to explore the bound volumes at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ub.uni-heidelberg.de\/helios\/fachinfo\/www\/kunst\/digilit\/artjournals\/jugend.html\" target=\"_blank\">Heidelberg University archive<\/a>. The two books for 1898 can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/diglit.ub.uni-heidelberg.de\/diglit\/jugend1898_1?sid=254bbf7ea9f5f30fa7f17e5aa875a35b\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/diglit.ub.uni-heidelberg.de\/diglit\/jugend1898_2?sid=254bbf7ea9f5f30fa7f17e5aa875a35b\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-02.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-03.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-03.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-04.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-04.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of two pages of bookplate designs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-05.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-05.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-06.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-06.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was a surprise, a rather strange and not entirely successful symbolic drawing by <a href=\"http:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos\u00e9phin_P\u00e9ladan\" target=\"_blank\">Jos\u00e9phin P\u00e9ladan<\/a> (1859\u20131918), aka the S\u00e2r Peladan, author of <em>L\u2019Androgyne<\/em> (1890) and founder of the Salon de la Rose+Croix in Paris, a Symbolist art salon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-07.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-07.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another work with Symbolist connections, a cartoon by Dutch artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artcyclopedia.com\/artists\/toorop_jan.html\" target=\"_blank\">Jan Toorop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-08.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-08.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-09.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-09.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>One of several pages of playing card designs specially created for the magazine. The deck was for sale in the back pages of <em>Jugend<\/em> along with postcard sets.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/03\/jugend-98-10.jpg\" alt=\"jugend-98-10.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The card deck was by Julius Diez whose illustrations appear regularly throughout this year.
