{"id":630,"date":"2006-06-29T02:25:31","date_gmt":"2006-06-29T01:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=630"},"modified":"2008-07-18T12:14:31","modified_gmt":"2008-07-18T11:14:31","slug":"vintage-magazine-art-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2006\/06\/29\/vintage-magazine-art-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Vintage magazine art II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/photo.163.com\/photos\/tylerlee_mag\/3257974\/#p1\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2006\/06\/vogue.jpg\" alt=\"vogue.jpg\" id=\"image629\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the days before colour photography most magazine covers were created by illustrators (as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>New Yorker<\/em><\/a> still is), a situation that&#8217;s left behind a rich legacy of wonderful artwork often far more stimulating than any of the magazine contents. <a href=\"http:\/\/photo.163.com\/photos\/tylerlee_mag\/3257974\/#p1\" target=\"_blank\">This site<\/a> has a great collection of early <em>Vogue<\/em> covers that show an amazing amount of variety and originality at play. Some of these early issues even break with the understandable stricture for a fashion magazine of having a female figure as the focus.<\/p>\n<p>Looking over this selection, it&#8217;s impossible not to compare the rich designs of the 1920s with today&#8217;s bland uniformity. <em>Vogue<\/em> now looks like any other magazine for women, with an overly made-up (often celebrity) face filling the cover and the whole picture crowded with sub-headings  and a general clutter of typography.
