From the sleeve of Viva by La D\u00fcsseldorf. <\/em><\/p>\n \u201cThere were three great beats in the \u201970s: Fela Kuti\u2019s Afrobeat, James Brown\u2019s funk and Klaus Dinger\u2019s Neu! beat.\u201d Brian Eno<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Klaus Dinger, the great drummer for Neu! and La D\u00fcsseldorf (and briefly Kraftwerk<\/a> in 1971) died back in March but news of this has taken a while to emerge. Everything he did in the Seventies is essential, the Neu! albums especially. YouTube has a few choice examples such as this clip<\/a> of someone playing Neu!’s finest (and oft-imitated) moment, Hallogallo<\/em>, slightly too fast. Then there’s Isi<\/em><\/a> from Neu! 75<\/em> and the crazy glam-punk of Hero<\/em><\/a> (a tremendous period performance) shortly before guitarist Michael Rother left and the band transmuted into La D\u00fcsseldorf. For a blast of the latter, there’s the majestic Rheinita<\/em><\/a> from Viva<\/em>.
