The popularity of the text when combined with the ease of imitating Edward Fitzgerald&#8217;s quatrains led to the publication of many novelty versions\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/bwb_P9-DLT-837\/page\/n7\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Rub\u00e1iy\u00e1t of a Persian Kitten<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/rubiytofmoto00well\/page\/n11\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Rub\u00e1iy\u00e1t of a Motor Car<\/em><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/rubiytofbach00rowl\/page\/n7\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Rub\u00e1iy\u00e1t of a Bachelor<\/em><\/a>, and so on\u2014all of which came with their own illustrations.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/sherriffs02.jpg\" alt=\"sherriffs02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/in.gov.ignca.40556\/page\/n5\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1947 edition<\/a> illustrated by Scottish artist Robert Stewart Sherriffs is more serious than these, with an introduction by Laurence Housman, the texts of three different 19th-century translations, together with supplementary material about Edward Fitzgerald. Sherriffs worked for a number of years as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npg.org.uk\/collections\/search\/person\/mp07555\/robert-stewart-sherriffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a caricaturist<\/a> for <em>Punch<\/em> magazine and other publications but prior to this he was also a book illustrator.
