{"id":29091,"date":"2026-01-07T16:30:42","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T16:30:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=29091"},"modified":"2026-01-07T15:01:37","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T15:01:37","slug":"eclipse-and-sunscreen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2026\/01\/07\/eclipse-and-sunscreen\/","title":{"rendered":"Eclipse and Sunscreen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aG2gJfxTl1k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/eclipse.jpg\" alt=\"eclipse.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gobelins, the French school of film animation, has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@gobelins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">its own YouTube channel<\/a> where students post a variety of clips showing technical exercises or, as in the case of this pair of films, complete works. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aG2gJfxTl1k\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Eclipse<\/em><\/a> (directed by Theo Guignard, No\u00e9 Lecombre and Hugo Moreno) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Na-4Unv0voQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Sunscreen<\/em><\/a> (directed by Xinzhi Ma, Yuan Liu, Yufan Chen and Zixiao Yue) are both science-fiction pieces that are also very short, being more like anecdotes than stories. Of the two I prefer <em>Eclipse<\/em> but both are very accomplished, and a welcome riposte to the ubiquity of the Pixar house style. Stylistic exercises like these are seldom extended to feature-length (or if they are, they get cancelled like <em>Scavengers Reign<\/em>) but it&#8217;s good to see younger animators following in the footsteps of Ren\u00e9 Laloux.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Na-4Unv0voQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/sunscreen.jpg\" alt=\"sunscreen.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And speaking of Laloux, the restored <em>Les Ma\u00eetres du temps<\/em> (<em>Time Masters<\/em>) was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fnac.com\/a21274407\/Les-Maitres-du-temps-Blu-ray-Jean-Valmont-Blu-ray\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released on blu-ray in France last year<\/a>. As with many French releases there are no English subtitles but it&#8217;s good to know it&#8217;s available again.
