{"id":23654,"date":"2023-11-01T16:30:05","date_gmt":"2023-11-01T16:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=23654"},"modified":"2023-12-17T13:44:07","modified_gmt":"2023-12-17T13:44:07","slug":"more-aubrey-fakery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2023\/11\/01\/more-aubrey-fakery\/","title":{"rendered":"More Aubrey fakery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/fake1.jpg\" alt=\"fake1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s surprising to find such blatant examples of fraudulence on a major museum website yet here we are with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artic.edu\/collection?artist_ids=Imitator%20of%20Aubrey%20Vincent%20Beardsley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">13 poor attempts at the Beardsley style<\/a> credited by the Art Institute of Chicago to &#8220;Imitator of Aubrey Vincent Beardsley&#8221;. Imitators usually sign their work with their own names, not with the name of the artist being imitated, the description required here is &#8220;faker&#8221;. As Beardsley imitations go, these examples aren&#8217;t as clumsy as some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2020\/01\/17\/aubrey-fakery\/\">the Nichols fakes<\/a>; they&#8217;re also not as widely disseminated but then Nichols published a book of his attempts. Chicago just happens to be the home of a group of Beardsley&#8217;s contemporaries led by Will Bradley who championed the Beardsley style in <em>The Chap-Book<\/em>.
