He emailed me a couple of years ago in his capacity as a collector of <em>fin-de-si\u00e8cle<\/em> art, hoping I might answer a question about a very obscure artist. If you require justifications for the blogging habit then add this to the list. Humphries&#8217; first book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookm-ark.fi\/product\/bizarre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Bizarre<\/em><\/a> (1965), is a more cerebral counterpart to Charles Addams&#8217; <em>Dear Dead Days<\/em>, and a compendium of oddities that I&#8217;d buy if I ever saw it in a secondhand shop. RIP also to incendiary singer <a href=\"http:\/\/blissout.blogspot.com\/2023\/04\/rip-mark-stewart.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Stewart<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Schulz gets compared to Kafka because of his dreamy, disconcerting stories, but in Balint\u2019s book, a version of Schulz emerges that is closer to one of Kafka\u2019s characters\u2014a man on the run who can\u2019t get past the city walls; an artist exiled by a shape-shifting, unknowable tormentor\u2014than to Franz himself.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/themillions.com\/2023\/04\/dream-journals-revisiting-bruno-schulz.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leo Lasdun<\/a> reviewing <a href=\"https:\/\/wwnorton.com\/books\/9780393866575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a new biography of Bruno Schulz<\/a> by Benjamin Balint.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Instead of asking whether an octopus shows aspects of human intelligence, perhaps the better question is whether humans can show aspects of octopus intelligence.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/aeon.co\/essays\/can-the-liquid-motion-of-the-octopus-radicalise-our-ideas-about-time\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">David Borkenhagen<\/a> on octopuses and what they might teach us about the perception of time.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Uproar was my element, I wanted to get people moving, the more they roared, the bolder I became.&#8221; The pioneering theatrical performances of <a href=\"https:\/\/strangeflowers.wordpress.com\/2023\/04\/20\/valeska-unveiled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Valeska Gert<\/a> are explored at Strange Flowers.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Digital copies of albums by the mighty Earth may currently be purchased at <a href=\"https:\/\/earthsl.bandcamp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the group&#8217;s Bandcamp page<\/a> for $1 each.
