{"id":22492,"date":"2023-02-25T19:02:07","date_gmt":"2023-02-25T19:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=22492"},"modified":"2025-09-21T12:14:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-21T11:14:14","slug":"weekend-links-662","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2023\/02\/25\/weekend-links-662\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend links 662"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.behance.net\/gallery\/51611943\/Pierrot-le-Fleur\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/mika.jpg\" alt=\"mika.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Pierrot le Fleur by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.behance.net\/marinamika\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marina Mika<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 I&#8217;ve been saying for years that Andrzej \u017bu\u0142awski&#8217;s <em>On the Silver Globe<\/em> should be given a proper blu-ray release, and that&#8217;s what Region B viewers will receive soon courtesy of Eureka. <a href=\"https:\/\/eurekavideo.co.uk\/movie\/andrzej-zulawski-three-films-limited-edition-box-set\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Andrzej \u017bu\u0142awski: Three Films<\/em><\/a> will be released in May, a set that comprises the director&#8217;s unfinished SF film, his debut feature, <em>The Third Part of the Night<\/em> (1971)\u2014which I still haven&#8217;t seen\u2014and also <em>The Devil<\/em> (1972), which I have seen but only as a poor copy that&#8217;s been circulating via illicit channels for many years.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;The album\u2019s 18-minute, multi-section standout <em>Jenny Ondioline<\/em> acquired a crucial role. It became the first track I\u2019d play whenever I boarded a train, slipped on my headphones, and settled in beside an anonymous rail rider.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/daily.bandcamp.com\/resonance\/stereolab-transient-random-noise-bursts-with-announcements-essay\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hayden Merrick<\/a> on travelling across the USA to the sounds of <em>Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements<\/em> by Stereolab.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 At Aquarium Drunkard: <a href=\"https:\/\/aquariumdrunkard.com\/2023\/02\/23\/technicolor-paradise-rhum-rhapsodies-other-exotic-delights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E. Hehr<\/a> explores musical exotica via <em>Technicolor Paradise: Rhum Rhapsodies &amp; Other Exotic Delights<\/em>, &#8220;&#8230;a compilation that touches upon the noir side of exotica, far more gritty and raw compared to the lavish production on the esteemed exotica albums from Capitol and Liberty.&#8221; I own this collection. It&#8217;s a good one.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cMy own experience,\u201d Leda muses \u201ctells me that more love goes into the thought of homosexuality than the practice.\u201d Other gays are neither radical heroes nor the pathetic, self-hating fairies of, say, Mart Crowley\u2019s <em>Boys in the Band<\/em>. This frankness makes <em>Love, Leda<\/em> a singular work; a contemporary portrait of working-class gay London in the years running up to decriminalisation that neither flatters nor sensationalises. In doing so, Hyatt transforms gay sex and love from an abject taboo to a deeply human intimacy.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2023\/feb\/23\/a-great-lost-work-love-ledas-candid-tale-of-1960s-gay-life-is-a-touching-time-capsule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Huw Lemmey<\/a> on Love, Leda by Mark Hyatt, a candid tale of gay life in the Britain of the 1960s<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;It became something like a ritual, an exhumation of long-unheard music reanimated as glacial drones and ghostly symphonic movements\u2014the sound of the cathedral transmuted into an enveloping shadow of pulsation, echo and glitch.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/theeternalchord.bandcamp.com\/album\/orgelwerke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Orgelwerk<\/em><\/a> by Ted Reichman.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anothermag.com\/design-living\/14702\/50-questions-with-max-richter-interview-sleep-tranquility-base\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Max Richter<\/a> answers 50 questions. <em>Sleep<\/em>, Richter&#8217;s 8-hour ambient epic, is still my favourite among his compositions that I&#8217;ve heard to date: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/master\/916756-Max-Richter-Sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">8 CDs and a blu-ray disc<\/a> from Deutsche Grammophon.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 RIP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2023\/feb\/24\/alastair-brotchie-obituary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alastair Brotchie<\/a>, publisher of books at <a href=\"https:\/\/atlaspress.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Atlas Press<\/a>, and biographer of Alfred Jarry.
