On the one hand, they\u2019re only possible digitally, on the other, they seem to be an attempt to add some mystique to a circle of plastic.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/32116-cd-40th-anniversary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daryl Worthington<\/a> on the 40th anniversary of the Digital Audio Compact Disc. Regular readers will know that CD has been, and remains, my favourite musical format for reasons I won&#8217;t bother arguing here. Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2022\/sep\/27\/theres-endless-choice-but-youre-not-listening-fans-quitting-spotify-to-save-their-love-of-music\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;There\u2019s endless choice, but you\u2019re not listening&#8221;: fans quitting Spotify to save their love of music<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Meek&#8217;s use of sound effects and swathes of ghostly reverb, woven into seemingly innocuous pop songs and rock and roll instrumentals\u2014as if the BBC Radiophonic Workshop was directed by Phil Spector\u2014created a sense of the sublime and hinted at strange realities beyond our own.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/32131-joe-meek-best-songs-strange-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark Pilkington<\/a> explores the strange world of Joe Meek.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Structured as a &#8216;dream within a dream&#8217;, the narrative weaves together mythological, biblical, and occult references to construct a universe filled with ruinous landscapes and orgiastic celebrations.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/publicdomainreview.org\/essay\/hypnerotomachia-poliphili-and-the-architecture-of-dreams\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Demetra Vogiatzaki<\/a> on the enigmas, architectural and otherwise, presented by <em>Hypnerotomachia Poliphili<\/em> (1499).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The man who made this absurd noir was answerable neither to studio nor Shakespeare, but only his own monumental whims. Thus, <em>Mr. Arkadin<\/em> sends <em>Citizen Kane<\/em> (1941) through the looking glass\u2014the action transposed to post\u2013World War II Spain and given a spin somewhere between metaphysics and megalomania&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>If Jean Cocteau\u2019s <em>Orpheus<\/em> recast myth as pulp, <em>Mr. Arkadin<\/em> elevates pulp to myth. It is the most Borgesian of Welles\u2019s movies. Writing in <em>Cahiers du cin\u00e9ma<\/em>, the young Eric Rohmer compared <em>Mr. Arkadin<\/em> to Jules Verne and Fant\u00f4mas: <i>It creates something that is \u00adnearly impossible today: a romantic fiction that involves neither the future nor any removal from one\u2019s usual surroundings&#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.criterion.com\/current\/posts\/418-welles-amazed-the-lives-of-mr-arkadin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">J. Hoberman<\/a> writing in 2006 about Orson Welles&#8217; <\/em>Mr. Arkadin<em> (1955). I was rewatching the film earlier this week in its guise as <\/em>Confidential Report<em>, the version re-edited by its producer to try and create something with greater commercial appeal.
