Lithub&#8217;s list of McCarthy&#8217;s rare public manifestations missed <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20071114031953\/https:\/\/time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,1673269,00.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this chatty encounter<\/a> with the Coen Brothers from 2007.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Strange Flowers celebrates <a href=\"https:\/\/strangeflowers.wordpress.com\/2022\/03\/16\/rosa-bonheur-in-22-images\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rosa Bonheur<\/a>, &#8220;the most famous and successful woman artist of the 19th century, dressing in men\u2019s clothing, smoking cigars, riding astride and living openly with female partners.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/alchemiebooks.com\/a-secret-between-gentlemen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>A Secret Between Gentlemen<\/em><\/a> by Peter Jordaan &#8220;details a British Government coverup of a gay scandal involving great names. Hidden for 120 years, it is a history that has never been told, and until recently could not be told.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>[Mark E. Smith] liked HP Lovecraft, whose monster of <em>The Call of Cthulhu<\/em> and <em>The Dunwich Horror<\/em> appears in the song <em>N.W.R.A.<\/em>, \u201cBody a tentacle mess\u201d. He quite liked MR James\u2019 <em>Ghost Stories<\/em>. He liked the more recent, seemingly disgraced, and by then unfashionable, occult fiction of Colin Wilson: <em>The Black Room<\/em> and <em>Ritual in the Dark<\/em>. But He LOVED the writing of early twentieth century Arthur Machen. \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/escapemagazineuk\/Escape%20Magazine%20%281989%20UK%29%20017\/page\/16\/mode\/2up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Machen\u2019s fucking brilliant.<\/a>\u201d In his autobiography <em>Renegade<\/em> he comments, \u201cHe lives in this alternative world: the real occult\u2019s not in Egypt, but in the pubs of the East End and the stinking boats of the Thames\u2014on your doorstep, basically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.woebot.com\/2022\/03\/hip-priest.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Woebot<\/a> goes deep into the grotesque and esoteric worlds of Mark E.
