I wasn&#8217;t aware until I started reading about the history of this magazine that <em>bara<\/em> (&#8220;rose&#8221;) was originally a pejorative term like &#8220;pansy&#8221;. As with many slang terms, not least &#8220;gay&#8221;, the meaning and application has evolved over time. Use of &#8220;bara&#8221; today is confused by its application in the West to almost any form of gay manga that isn&#8217;t <em>yaoi<\/em>, a utilization that some Japanese artists take issue with.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/barazoku007.jpg\" alt=\"barazoku007.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For Western viewers, the most immediately striking thing about the covers of <em>Barazoku<\/em> is their reliance on drawings or paintings rather than photographs. This isn&#8217;t entirely unprecedented\u2014<em>Physique Pictorial<\/em> and <em>Fizeek<\/em> in the US used drawn covers from time to time\u2014but making artwork a consistent cover feature is very unusual. (The first few covers also feature extracts from the lyrics of <em>Bridge Over Troubled Water<\/em>&#8230;) Some of the men who provided covers or interior art have appeared here in the past, among them <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2010\/06\/18\/the-art-of-ben-kimura\/\">Ben Kimura<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2009\/08\/07\/the-art-of-goh-mishima-1924%E2%80%931989\/\">Go Mishima<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2007\/12\/31\/the-art-of-sadao-hasegawa-1945%E2%80%931999\/\">Sadao Hasegawa<\/a>.
