She aligns more naturally in retrospect with Madonna\u2014potent, fiercely individualistic, disruptive, and self-invented. Carter\u2019s evolved philosophical position on gender was a variation on Stoicism. Gender roles were \u201cbehavioural modes,\u201d a construct (\u201cBaby is hermaphrodite!\u201d), and there was weakness in allowing oneself to be beholden to (let alone enslaved by) a construct.
