The subject this time is abandoned cinemas, past and present.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/dougmckechnie.bandcamp.com\/album\/san-francisco-moog-1968-72\" target=\"_blank\"><em>San Francisco Moog: 1968\u201372<\/em><\/a> by Doug McKechnie, a collection of early synthesizer music using a modular instrument that was later bought by Tangerine Dream. &#8220;The quiescent, meditative pulse of the music has much more in common with what would come to be known as the Berlin school of German electronic music than anything coming out of the US at the time,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/4columns.org\/dayal-geeta\/doug-mckechnie\" target=\"_blank\">Geeta Dayal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Sarah Davachi released a new album recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/sarahdavachi.bandcamp.com\/album\/cantus-descant\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cantus, Descant<\/em><\/a>, so The Quietus asked her to discuss <a href=\"https:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/29181-sarah-davachi-bakers-dozen-favourite-albums\" target=\"_blank\">her favourite albums<\/a>. Related: XLR8R has <a href=\"https:\/\/xlr8r.com\/podcasts\/influences-19-sarah-davachi\/\" target=\"_blank\">a mix of the music<\/a> that Davachi regards as influences. Kudos for the choice of <em>Why Do I Still Sleep <\/em>by Popol Vuh, an overlooked piece from the end of the group&#8217;s career.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When I use relevance as a filter for determining what books to read, I\u2019m failing to make myself available for an authentic encounter with otherness, something genuine art always offers. I\u2019m presuming that I can guess, from the barest plot summary, whether a book will be useful in my life. But how can I know what I will find relevant about a work before I have submitted myself to the experience? I don\u2019t think we are likely to be transformed by art if we try to determine that encounter in advance. Part of the vulnerability necessary for transformation is the recognition that I am, to a great extent, a mystery to myself. How could I know what I\u00a0need?<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/harpers.org\/archive\/2020\/11\/making-meaning-garth-greenwell\/\" target=\"_blank\">Garth Greenwell<\/a> on the idea that a novel is only worthwhile if it is somehow &#8220;relevant&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;For a long time I had been encouraged by the world of fine art to remove references to the spiritual from my work,&#8221; says Penny Slinger in a piece by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2020\/nov\/04\/spiritualitys-return-to-art-before-youd-have-been-laughed-out-of-the-gallery\" target=\"_blank\">Hettie Judah<\/a> exploring the resurgence of interest in occult art. Good to see S. Elizabeth and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2020\/09\/30\/the-art-of-the-occult\/\">her book on the subject<\/a> receiving a mention.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Arriving on Region B blu-ray later this month is <em>Spring<\/em> (2014) by Justin Benson &amp; Aaron Moorhead, which <a href=\"https:\/\/101-films-store.myshopify.com\/products\/spring-2014\" target=\"_blank\">101 Films<\/a> describes as Richard Linklater channeling HP Lovecraft.
