The piece includes one of my book covers (ta!) plus a link to an earlier post I wrote about the cover designs of M. John Harrison&#8217;s Viriconium books. Since I&#8217;m connected to the thesis I&#8217;ll suggest that Lovecraft was resistant to the worldbuilding impulse in part because he was almost always writing horror stories. Having studied the genre at length he was well aware of the need to leave suggestive voids for the reader&#8217;s imagination.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 RIP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-manchester-53558346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denise Johnson<\/a>. All the obituaries mention the big names she worked with, notably New Order and Primal Scream, but being in the pool of Manchester session artists she also appeared on a couple of records by my colleagues at Savoy. Her voice is one of those you first hear on the PJ Proby cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Je0j2s4MVpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>I&#8217;m On Fire<\/em><\/a>, while with friend Rowetta she improvised her way through a Hi-NRG original (and a favourite of Anohni&#8217;s), the scurrilous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t0Niv9IMX6E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Shoot Yer Load<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 At the BFI: Axel Madsen interviews <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/news-opinion\/sight-sound-magazine\/archives\/man-all-seasons-fritz-lang-interviewed-1967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fritz Lang<\/a> in 1967; Serena Scateni on where to begin with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/news-opinion\/news-bfi\/features\/where-begin-nobuhiko-obayashi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nobuhiko Obayashi<\/a>; and Roger Luckhurst reviews the spomenik-infested\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bfi.org.uk\/news-opinion\/sight-sound-magazine\/reviews-recommendations\/last-and-first-men-johann-johannsson-tilda-swinton-science-fiction-experiment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Last and First Men<\/em><\/a> by J\u00f3hann J\u00f3hannsson.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Be more aware of the rest of the world!&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/jul\/28\/jon-hassell-musics-great-globetrotter-be-more-aware-of-the-rest-of-the-world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jon Hassell<\/a>, talking to Alexis Petridis about a life spent making music.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/ilovetypography.com\/2020\/07\/31\/inventing-posters-early-printmaking\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John Boardley<\/a> on the Renaissance origins of the printed poster.
