{"id":19908,"date":"2020-07-15T16:33:20","date_gmt":"2020-07-15T15:33:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=19908"},"modified":"2025-09-20T18:57:03","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T17:57:03","slug":"peakes-insects","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2020\/07\/15\/peakes-insects\/","title":{"rendered":"Peake&#8217;s Insects"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/peake1-big.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/peake1.jpg\" alt=\"peake1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Having recently watched Jan \u0160vankmajer&#8217;s self-reflexive film of the Capek Brothers&#8217; <em>Insect Play<\/em> I was intrigued by a mention in one of the Mervyn Peake biographies that Peake had created costumes for two stagings of the play in London in 1932 and 1936. &#8220;Mr Mervyn Peake\u2019s costumes could not be bettered,&#8221; said James Agate in the <em>Sunday Times<\/em>, but my sole book of Peake artwork doesn&#8217;t mention the play at all, and these drawings are the only examples to found after a web search, not the photos I was hoping for. The one below is a more original conception than those used by the amateur actors in the \u0160vankmajer film.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/peake2-big.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/peake2.jpg\" alt=\"peake2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My own workload is gaining momentum just now so posting here may be sporadic for a while. I&#8217;m also recoding my website from scratch which doesn&#8217;t help when you already have more than enough plates spinning. Having refreshed the blog with a flexible template that resizes itself for different devices I decided it to do the same for the rest of the site. I last attempted anything on this scale in 2005 so I&#8217;m having to educate myself all over again in the mysteries of cascading style sheets.
