{"id":19770,"date":"2020-06-14T01:01:54","date_gmt":"2020-06-14T00:01:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=19770"},"modified":"2020-06-14T01:01:54","modified_gmt":"2020-06-14T00:01:54","slug":"weekend-links-521","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2020\/06\/14\/weekend-links-521\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend links 521"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/parent.jpg\" alt=\"parent.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Au Lion d&#8217;or (1965) by Mimi Parent.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 After the recent announcement of Jon Hassell&#8217;s health issues it&#8217;s good to see he has a new album on the way at the end of July. <a href=\"https:\/\/bleep.com\/release\/190952-jon-hassell-seeing-through-sound-pentimento-volume-two\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Seeing Through Sound (Pentimento Volume Two)<\/em><\/a> follows the form of the first volume, <em>Seeing Through Pictures<\/em> (2018), in reworking elements of earlier recordings into new forms. Not remixes, more reimaginings, and a process that Hassell has been applying to his own work for many years, most notably on his collaboration with Peter Freeman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Jon-Hassell-Peter-Freeman-Bluescreen-Project-The-Vertical-Collection-Sketches-\/release\/1796065\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Vertical Collection<\/em><\/a> (1997). The latter is an album which is impossible to find today and really ought to be reissued, together with more scarcities from the Hassell catalogue.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Death of a typeface: <a href=\"https:\/\/ilovetypography.com\/2020\/06\/06\/robert-granjon-civilite-death-of-a-typeface\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Boardley<\/a> on Robert Granjon&#8217;s Civilit\u00e9, a type design intended to be the national typeface of France but which fell out of favour. It wasn&#8217;t completely forgotten however; I was re-reading Huysmans&#8217; <em>\u00c0 Rebours<\/em> a couple of weeks ago, and Civilit\u00e9 is mentioned there as being a type that Des Esseintes chooses for some of his privately-printed books.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 At Plutonium Shores: Kurosawa versus Leone in <a href=\"https:\/\/plutoniumshores.blogspot.com\/2020\/05\/a-fistful-of-yojimbo.html\" target=\"_blank\">A Fistful of Yojimbo<\/a>. Christopher Frayling makes a similar analysis in his landmark study, <em>Spaghetti Westerns<\/em> (1981), but I didn&#8217;t realise that Leone had based so many of his shots on Kurosawa&#8217;s film.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 More lockdown art: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thisisunbound.co.uk\/products\/seen-from-here\" target=\"_blank\">Seen from Here: Writing in the Lockdown<\/a><\/em> is a collection of new writing edited by Tim Etchells and Vlatka Horvat.
