Gy\u00f6rgy Ligeti always seemed ambivalent about having his music used as cinematic illustration (Kubrick annoyed him by altering some of it without permission) but Penderecki worked as a composer for Polish films in the 1960s, not only providing a score for <em>The Saragossa Manuscript<\/em> (1965) but also (surprisingly) writing music for a number of short animations. I&#8217;ve been listening to his music for almost 40 years, after a chance discovery of the stunning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HilGthRhwP8\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Threnody For The Victims Of Hiroshima<\/em><\/a> led me to seek out more. I have to admit that the appeal of his recordings lay in their ability to thrill and terrify\u2014qualities that musicologists seldom address\u2014and I&#8217;ve never paid any attention to\u00a0Penderecki&#8217;s later work which was less of an assault on the senses. At The Quietus <a href=\"https:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/28073-kryzystof-penderecki-obituary\" target=\"_blank\">James Martin<\/a> argues for listening to the entire oeuvre, not just the early works. Marber talked about this period of his work in <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20121012112856\/https:\/\/www.creativereview.co.uk\/cr-blog\/2009\/september\/romek-marber\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Penguin by Illustrators<\/em><\/a> in 2009. Elsewhere: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eyemagazine.com\/feature\/article\/penguin-crime-text-in-full\" target=\"_blank\">Rick Poyner<\/a> on Marber&#8217;s design, and <a href=\"https:\/\/penguinseriesdesign.com\/2017\/02\/15\/how-the-marber-grid-was-made\/\" target=\"_blank\">a suggestion for how the Marber Grid was designed<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;&#8230;you\u2019ll see Lego and children\u2019s toys, but also Rawlplugs, tile spacers, Monopoly houses, cigarillo tips, curtain hooks, biofilters, Smarties tube lids, fishing beads, broken security seals, razor parts, bits of toothbrushes, roofing screw caps, medical lancets, golf tees, false teeth, plastic soldiers, posties\u2019 rubber bands, bungs and stoppers.&#8221; Beachcomber <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2020\/apr\/04\/monopoly-houses-toy-soldiers-lego-museum-of-plastic-lost-at-sea\" target=\"_blank\">Tracey Williams<\/a> talks to Andrew Male about the undying ubiquity of plastic waste.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Thanks to Bookshop, there is no reason to buy books on Amazon anymore,&#8221; says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehook.com\/article\/books\/bookshop-independent-bookstores-amazon\" target=\"_blank\">Alex Lauer<\/a>.
