Albert Robida is best known today for the illustrations from his books which present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2012\/07\/24\/le-vingtieme-siecle-by-albert-robida\/\">a humorous look at life in the future<\/a>. But he was also a working artist, and enough of an expert on medieval French architecture to oversee the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2012\/07\/26\/albert-robidas-vieux-paris\/\">recreation of Old Paris<\/a> that filled a bank of the Seine for the Exposition\u00a0Universelle of 1900.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"robida02.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/robida02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Robida&#8217;s architectural interest is to the fore in many of his illustrations for Balzac&#8217;s droll tales; where Dor\u00e9 often renders buildings as blurred silhouettes, Robida offers authentic detail. He&#8217;s also a match for Dor\u00e9 when it comes to comic grotesquery, as these stories demand, while adding anthropomorphic touches of his own.<\/p>\n<p>As before, this is a small selection from a large quantity of illustrations.
