{"id":17925,"date":"2016-06-23T01:37:31","date_gmt":"2016-06-23T00:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=17925"},"modified":"2016-06-23T01:37:31","modified_gmt":"2016-06-23T00:37:31","slug":"the-art-of-paul-thevenaz-1891-1921","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2016\/06\/23\/the-art-of-paul-thevenaz-1891-1921\/","title":{"rendered":"The art of Paul Th\u00e9venaz, 1891\u20131921"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"thevenaz01.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/thevenaz01.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This portrait of Jean Cocteau by Swiss artist Paul Th\u00e9venaz isn&#8217;t included in the artist&#8217;s memorial book, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/paulthevenazreco00thev\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Paul Th\u00e9venaz, A Record of His Life and Art<\/em><\/a> (1922) which was published after Th\u00e9venaz died suddenly at the age of 30. Everything else in this post is, however, and there&#8217;s more in the book itself which shows Th\u00e9venaz ranging through society portraits (and self-portraits), designs for the theatre (I&#8217;ve included a Salom\u00e9 below), murals and sketches.<\/p>\n<p>Th\u00e9venaz is another candidate for the pantheon of lost gay artists although the work in the book isn&#8217;t especially homoerotic. There are fauns, however, which might be connected to his romantic association with poet Witter Brynner. The latter&#8217;s <em>A Canticle of Pan<\/em> was written in 1918, and is one of the many manifestations of the horned god in the literature of the period. As for Th\u00e9venaz, I like his drawing style a great deal; in places it resembles Wyndham Lewis in its sweeping curves and stylisations.
