{"id":17810,"date":"2016-03-31T01:08:33","date_gmt":"2016-03-31T00:08:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=17810"},"modified":"2016-03-31T01:08:33","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T00:08:33","slug":"everyman-and-other-plays-by-john-austen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2016\/03\/31\/everyman-and-other-plays-by-john-austen\/","title":{"rendered":"Everyman and Other Plays by John Austen"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"austen01.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/austen01.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Given the religious theme I ought to have posted this last week. <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ebay.co.uk\/itm\/1st-1925-John-Austen-SUPERB-GOLD-PLATES-Art-Deco-HARRY-CLARKE-Aubrey-Beardsley-\/371566935015?hash=item56831d7be7:g:yz4AAOSwZQxW2MXM\" target=\"_blank\">Everyman and Other Plays<\/a><\/em> (1925) is a collection of three medieval plays\u2014<em>Everyman<\/em>, <em>The Nativity<\/em> and <em>The Shepherd&#8217;s Play<\/em>\u2014illustrated by British artist John Austen. The scans are from a recent auction at eBay by silver-gryph, some of whose other book scans have appeared here in the past. Austen was a prolific illustrator but many of his books have been out of print for decades, and the drawings can be hard to find online. This is one volume I&#8217;d not seen before, not as impressive as some of his earlier works but the minimal colouring works well. The printed book will look a lot more striking since the dull greenish tones are gold ink. There are more plates and vignettes on the auction page.
