{"id":17243,"date":"2015-09-14T01:04:58","date_gmt":"2015-09-14T00:04:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=17243"},"modified":"2015-09-14T01:04:58","modified_gmt":"2015-09-14T00:04:58","slug":"the-seed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2015\/09\/14\/the-seed\/","title":{"rendered":"The Seed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/auctions.concertpostergallery.com\/ItemImages\/000000\/21_370a_lg.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"seed.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/seed.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I was so overworked during the summer months that late in June I missed the 50th anniversary of the birth of the psychedelic poster, something of a regrettable oversight considering I had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2015\/05\/22\/art-that-transcends\/\">an article about psychedelic art<\/a> in print throughout that month.<\/p>\n<p>This weathered item from June 1965 is generally credited as the first example of a type of poster whose influence\u2014diluted or not\u2014would be global during the next few years, hence the nickname given to it by collectors: &#8220;The Seed&#8221;. George Hunter and Michael Ferguson were the artists, and the antiquated drawing style is partly an attempt to complement the persona of The Charlatans, a San Francisco group who adopted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.discogs.com\/viewimages?release=3026013\" target=\"_blank\">19th-century clothing styles<\/a>. The Seed may appear naive in light of all that was happening a year later but Hunter &amp; Ferguson&#8217;s florid graphics were something new in 1965; the poster for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wolfgangsvault.com\/jefferson-airplane\/posters\/poster\/BG001.html\" target=\"_blank\">the Jefferson Airplane&#8217;s first show<\/a> at the Fillmore in February 1966 is more restrained in comparison, as were other concert posters from around the same time.
