{"id":17232,"date":"2015-09-10T01:02:00","date_gmt":"2015-09-10T00:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=17232"},"modified":"2015-09-10T01:02:00","modified_gmt":"2015-09-10T00:02:00","slug":"christopher-dressers-art-of-decorative-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2015\/09\/10\/christopher-dressers-art-of-decorative-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Christopher Dresser&#8217;s Art of Decorative Design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"dresser10.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/dresser10.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Studies of decorative design are numerous but this one stands out for the quality of its colour plates, all of which show a variety of designs derived from plants and flowers. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/albumofnineteent00unse\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Art of Decorative Design<\/em><\/a> (1862) is one of a number of design books published in the wake of the Great Exhibition of 1851, the most celebrated being Owen Jones&#8217; lavish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2014\/01\/25\/the-grammar-of-ornament-revisited\/\"><em>Grammar of Ornament<\/em><\/a>. Christopher Dresser was a\u00a0professor of ornamental art and botany who here continues where <em>The Grammar of Ornament<\/em> ends, exploring the floral design that&#8217;s a recurrent feature of Victorian decoration.
