This is understandable but it also means you could probably fill another week of posts pursuing further illustrations and homages. Rather than belabour things I&#8217;m ending with a few of the more notable derivations including some cover designs. The Einaudi volume above was the first printing in Italy in 1972.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"cities03.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cities03.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Cover design by Arnold Skolnick.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And this was the first American edition from Harcourt, Brace and Jovanovich in 1974. The cover is printed in silver foil which makes the book a particularly desirable item. This might explain why it&#8217;s also rather expensive today.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"cities04.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cities04.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Cover art:\u00a0Martyrdom of a Saint by Mons\u00f9 Desiderio.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The 1979 Picador edition is one of two paperback editions I own. The enigmatic &#8220;Mons\u00f9 Desiderio&#8221; has a confused identity (see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2006\/02\/19\/the-enigma-of-desiderio\/\">this post<\/a>), and specialised in curious architectural paintings so this is an apt choice.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"cities02.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/cities02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Cities and Memory 5: Maurilia by Matteo Menotto.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Yet more contemporary interpretations. Matteo Menotto&#8217;s piece is one of a series of silhouetted artworks from 2011. The artist discusses his work (in Italian) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artkernel.com\/?p=6452\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. Gabriele Genini&#8217;s linocut was part of a group exhibition in Florence in 2013.
