The artist is Louis Boulanger, a friend of Victor Hugo&#8217;s here illustrating one of the author&#8217;s poems for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/centdessinsextra00hugo\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cent Dessins: Extraits des Oeuvres de Victor Hugo<\/em><\/a>, illustrations for Hugo&#8217;s poetry, fiction and drama. Much of the work is mediocre or dull but this surprisingly excessive picture would have stood out even among better company. Many of the illustrations are engravings from paintings\u2014one is an adaptation of Delacroix&#8217;s <em>Liberty Leading the People<\/em>\u2014but the copy of Boulanger&#8217;s painting wanders freely from the original which is a <a href=\"https:\/\/osskoor.files.wordpress.com\/2013\/04\/870f0-la_ronde_du_sabbat_1830_louis2bboulanger.jpg?w=525&amp;h=700\" target=\"_blank\">much more typical piece of Romantic art<\/a>.
