{"id":16395,"date":"2015-02-18T04:13:25","date_gmt":"2015-02-18T03:13:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=16395"},"modified":"2015-02-18T04:13:25","modified_gmt":"2015-02-18T03:13:25","slug":"a-darkness-made-of-beating-wings-a-film-by-dave-colohan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2015\/02\/18\/a-darkness-made-of-beating-wings-a-film-by-dave-colohan\/","title":{"rendered":"A Darkness Made of Beating Wings, a film by Dave Colohan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/119349503\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"darkness.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/darkness.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When Dave Colohan was in touch late last year he mentioned work on a new film which is now available for viewing at Vimeo. <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/119349503\" target=\"_blank\"><em>A Darkness Made of Beating Wings<\/em><\/a> is another meditation on the sombre beauties of the Irish landscape (with additional shots of the Inner Hebrides) only this time there&#8217;s more textual substance in the figure portrayed by Ciar\u00e1n MacAoidh, a traveller caught between the Celtic past and present, shadowed all the while by a spectral figure. Deliciously atmospheric work once again, with monochrome photography by Mick Carey.<\/p>\n<p>Given all the Celtic business, I thought the hills seen at the beginning might be the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paps_of_Anu\" target=\"_blank\">Paps of Anu<\/a> in Kilarney but searching revealed that they&#8217;re a different set of breast-shaped hills, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paps_of_Jura\" target=\"_blank\">Paps of Jura<\/a> in the Hebrides, which I&#8217;d not heard of before.
