YouTube is laden with this stuff but the best things often take some searching out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tNQhWJkfnHs\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tangerine Dream, Paris, 1973<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nThis is one I&#8217;d not seen before, Tangerine Dream when they were still in their Krautrock phase prior to signing to Virgin. The music sounds like outtakes from the <em>Atem<\/em> album, and as usual with these films it&#8217;s great to see what instruments are being used.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bGByDwiiECw\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/synths2.jpg\" alt=\"synths2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bGByDwiiECw\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Tangerine Dream at Coventry Cathedral, 1975<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nBaumann, Franke and Froese again performing one of their cathedral concerts. Tony Palmer directed this but the sound was lost so the 27-minute film has edits of the <em>Ricochet<\/em> album as the soundtrack. (See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voices-in-the-net.de\/live_at_coventry_cathedral_1975.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Voices in the Net<\/a>.) <em>Ricochet<\/em> was compiled from live recordings from the same period so it&#8217;s not so inappropriate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Kgt-D3tFMaQ\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/synths3.jpg\" alt=\"synths3.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Kgt-D3tFMaQ\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Klaus Schulze, 1977<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nKlaus Schulze played drums on the first Tangerine Dream album, <em>Electronic Meditation<\/em> (1970), but was never an official member of the group. This lengthy improvisation is typical of the swathes of beatless music he was producing for much of the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NChqEEz31eE\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/synths6.jpg\" alt=\"synths6.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=NChqEEz31eE\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Laurie Spiegel, 1977<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nLaurie Spiegel demonstrates one of the earliest digital synthesizers. Spiegel&#8217;s 1980 album, <em>The Expanding Universe<\/em>, was <a href=\"http:\/\/download.unseenworlds.net\/album\/the-expanding-universe\" target=\"_blank\">reissued in 2012<\/a>, and is well worth seeking out. There&#8217;s more rare analogue and digital synthesis on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCEIPw9uWhRVz8K8nrCcxwPQ\" target=\"_blank\">her YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BZGui6q-f6o\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/synths4.jpg\" alt=\"synths4.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BZGui6q-f6o\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Vangelis, 1978<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nVangelis in the studio recording the <em>China<\/em> (1979) album. If you can overlook the Chinoiserie clich\u00e9s there&#8217;s some very good music on this release, some of which looks forward to the <em>Blade Runner<\/em> soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/synths7.jpg\" alt=\"synths7.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4593D44Lid4\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>3-2-1 Contact, 1980<\/strong><\/a><br \/>\nA great little film with Suzanne Ciani demonstrating synthesizers for a show on the Children&#8217;s Television Workshop. Featuring an oscilloscope and a Prophet 5.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hzG2vGwSYic\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/synths5.jpg\" alt=\"synths5.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hzG2vGwSYic\" target=\"_blank\">The Original New Timbral Orchestra<\/a><\/strong><br \/>\nMalcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff made their name as Tonto\u2019s Expanding Head Band, &#8220;Tonto&#8221; being Cecil\u2019s custom-built TONTO (The Original New Timbral Orchestra) synthesizer.
