Photo by JJ Clarke.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This year is the centenary of James Joyce&#8217;s short-story collection, <em>Dubliners<\/em>, so the book provides a predominant theme for this year&#8217;s Bloomsday. Not a great departure when both <em>Dubliners<\/em> and <em>Ulysses<\/em> concern the inhabitants of the same city. <em>Dubliners<\/em> would have been published before 1914 but the book was refused by several publishers and printers who objected to Joyce&#8217;s brand of realism.<\/p>\n<p>The picture above is from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/culturalinstitute\/exhibit\/dubliners-the-photographs-of-jj-clarke\/gRa4m70L?hl=en-GB&amp;utm_source=Prospects&amp;position=0%2C-1\" target=\"_blank\">a selection of photos of Dublin&#8217;s citizens by JJ Clarke<\/a>, all of which were taken during the time depicted in <em>Dubliners<\/em> and <em>Ulysses<\/em>. Elsewhere:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 In honour of the <em>Dubliners<\/em> centenary <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/jun\/12\/dubliners-100-15-new-stories-inspired-by-original-review\" target=\"_blank\">15 writers were asked to create new stories<\/a> as a response to Joyce&#8217;s originals. Eimear McBride is one of the contributors.
