McBride was interviewed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2014\/may\/16\/eimear-mcbride-girl-is-a-half-formed-thing-interview\" target=\"_blank\">Susanna Rustin<\/a> last month, shortly before the award was announced, and her novel has now become one of those minor <em>causes c\u00e9l\u00e8bres<\/em> for being rejected so often it was eventually published by a new imprint set up by a bookseller. &#8220;If the publishing industry doesn\u2019t take a risk then who will?&#8221; asks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebookseller.com\/news\/bookseller-henry-layte-discovering-mcbride.html\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Layte<\/a>, the bookseller in question.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of risk, <a href=\"http:\/\/davidhblog.wordpress.com\/2014\/06\/02\/science-fiction-playing-catch-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Hebblethwaite<\/a> coincidentally wrote a post earlier this week asking where the formal challenge has gone in science-fiction writing. (He mentions McBride in passing.) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ninaallan.co.uk\/?p=1605\" target=\"_blank\">Nina Allen<\/a> followed up with a post of her own. I suspect the books are still being written but they&#8217;re no longer being accepted by editors and publishers who want even more adventure stories, &#8220;sympathetic&#8221; characters, and easy reads. Novels that only aspire to be written equivalents of action films or computer games are doomed to be less exciting than their more kinetic competitors. The struggle between the values of art and the values of entertainment is an old one but it shouldn&#8217;t be an either\/or proposition. &#8220;Difficulty is subjective,&#8221; says\u00a0Eimear McBride, &#8220;the demands a writer makes on a reader can be perceived as a compliment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Related: the following from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/730\/the-art-of-poetry-no-80-geoffrey-hill\" target=\"_blank\">Geoffrey Hill<\/a> on &#8220;difficulty&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are difficult. One encounters in any ordinary day far more real difficulty than one confronts in the most \u201cintellectual\u201d piece of work.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2022 The Quietus pulled out all the stops this week, interviewing <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/15423-annette-peacock-interview\" target=\"_blank\">Annette Peacock<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/15457-iain-sinclair-interview-2\" target=\"_blank\">Iain Sinclair<\/a> (again), <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/15462-alan-moore-interview-iain-sinclair\" target=\"_blank\">Alan Moore<\/a> (again), and asking <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/15422-peter-strickland-favourite-albums\" target=\"_blank\">Peter Strickland<\/a>, the director of <em>Berberian Sound Studio<\/em>, for a list of his favourite albums. Given the above, it&#8217;s worth noting that all those people have produced challenging work of their own in different media.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/roadtrippers.kinja.com\/usc-library-receives-exhibit-dedicated-to-oldest-gay-mo-1584986030\" target=\"_blank\">The Satyrs Motorcycle Club<\/a> was founded in 1954 with seven members, but little did anyone know it would become the oldest running LGBT organization (and oldest gay motorcycle club) in the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nd2IyMcNM6Y\" target=\"_blank\">Trunk TV<\/a> posted another great selection of television title sequences.
