{"id":15047,"date":"2014-03-25T01:44:04","date_gmt":"2014-03-25T01:44:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=15047"},"modified":"2023-12-17T13:46:14","modified_gmt":"2023-12-17T13:46:14","slug":"antony-littles-echoes-of-aubrey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2014\/03\/25\/antony-littles-echoes-of-aubrey\/","title":{"rendered":"Antony Little&#8217;s echoes of Aubrey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"little1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/little1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>The Dancer (1967) by Antony Little.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>My thanks to Sweet Jane this time for alerting me to her post about <a href=\"http:\/\/sweetjanespopboutique.blogspot.ie\/2013\/10\/antony-little-beardsley-biba-and-beyond.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a series of Beardsley-inspired illustrations<\/a> from 1967 by Biba designer Antony Little. <em>The Wandering Jew and Other Stories<\/em> was the first translation in English of Apollinaire&#8217;s 1910 collection <em>L&#8217;H\u00e9r\u00e8siarque et Cie<\/em>. I&#8217;ve known about this book for a while but few of the illustrations have been on view anywhere until this post. There are eight in all, each of them very adeptly capturing different phases of Beardsley&#8217;s drawing style, from the spare black-and-whites to the more detailed renderings seen in his later work. The drawing below is another in the series from <a href=\"http:\/\/callumjames.blogspot.co.uk\/2012\/01\/eleven-book-catalogue-covers.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post of Callum&#8217;s<\/a> which also includes a favourite of mine by <a href=\"http:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-b6q9YJZFGQc\/TwONBKK1I4I\/AAAAAAAAG1M\/7FIge9Jy7jU\/s1600\/jw3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Beresford Egan<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Little&#8217;s designs, and the prominence of the Biba stores, did much to make Art Nouveau in general, and Beardsley in particular, a crucial component of London fashion in the late 1960s.
