We never met, unfortunately, but I was very pleased he asked me to create a cover for his unique occult novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/strangeattractor.co.uk\/shoppe\/somnium\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Somnium<\/em><\/a>, in 2011. Prior to this we&#8217;d been connected by shared acquaintances, colleagues, and membership in the informal cabal that was (and maybe still is) The Moon &amp; Serpent Grand Egyptian Theatre of Marvels. Steve&#8217;s long friendship with Alan Moore (no relation) is well-documented, not least by Alan himself who made Steve the subject of his <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/04603-alan-moore-interview-unearthing-2\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Unearthing<\/em><\/a> project. One surprising connection for me was that Steve also had a link to Savoy Books. In the late 1960s he was working for comics publisher Odhams where he was able to copy for David Britton some Ken Reid comic art which Odhams had refused to print. Dave published the forbidden pages in his first magazine, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savoy.abel.co.uk\/HTML\/weird1.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Weird Fantasy<\/em><\/a>, in 1969. In 2011 Steve talked to <a href=\"http:\/\/forbiddenplanet.co.uk\/blog\/2011\/lunar-man-padraig-o-mealoid-talks-to-steve-moore\/\" target=\"_blank\">P\u00e1draig \u00d3 M\u00e9al\u00f3id<\/a> about <em>Somnium<\/em>, and also to <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/07629-steve-moore-interview-somnium\" target=\"_blank\">Aug Stone<\/a> at The Quietus. Aug Stone penned a few memorial words <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/14789-steve-moore-rip\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;People love using the word\u00a0&#8216;porn&#8217; as long as there&#8217;s a partner for it. Pair &#8216;porn&#8217; with something else and it&#8217;s usually a good thing. A celebration of style and culture. But that word on its own? Well.&#8221; Porn star <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestranger.com\/seattle\/what-i-want-to-know-is-why-you-hate-porn-stars\/Content?oid=19094602\" target=\"_blank\">Conner Habib<\/a> asks why people have such a problem with porn actors.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.3quarksdaily.com\/3quarksdaily\/2014\/03\/cinema-roundup-russian-cinema.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dave Maier<\/a>&#8216;s Russian cinema recommendations. Several favourites there including the magical and remarkable <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0058642\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Shadows of Our Forgotten Ancestors<\/em><\/a> (1964) which, as Maier notes, isn&#8217;t really Russian but should be seen in any case.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Shakespeare uses verbal magic, cantrips and ditties, nonsense songs and verses throughout the plays, but in <em>Othello<\/em> he gives a glimpse of how powerful a spell becomes when it\u2019s no longer oral, but fixed in material form.
