{"id":14796,"date":"2014-01-20T02:37:57","date_gmt":"2014-01-20T02:37:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=14796"},"modified":"2014-01-20T02:37:57","modified_gmt":"2014-01-20T02:37:57","slug":"grand-capitals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2014\/01\/20\/grand-capitals\/","title":{"rendered":"Grand capitals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"larousse1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/larousse1.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no doubt true to say that they don&#8217;t make them like this any more, but it&#8217;s also likely that they didn&#8217;t make many of them like this in 1866 when the first volume of Pierre Larousse&#8217;s <em>Grand dictionnaire universel du XIXe si\u00e8cle<\/em> was published. Despite the title this is a 15-volume encyclopedia, each volume of which opens with a spread showing the initial letters of the section that follows. The illustrations fill most of each page, the left-hand side displaying the section initial in letterforms or typefaces from different ages, while the right-hand side embellishes a huge decorated letter with objects or scenes sharing the same initial. These are all in French, of course, so a pig (<em>cochon<\/em>) sits under the letter C. Illustrated alphabets are an old idea, and still a very common one since they make good teaching aids. Seeing these elaborate examples makes me wonder how far back the idea can be traced.<\/p>\n<p>These pictures are from <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/search.php?query=Grand%20dictionnaire%20universel%20du%2019e%20si\u00e8cle%20AND%20collection%3Atoronto\" target=\"_blank\">an incomplete set of the books<\/a> at the Internet Archive.
