{"id":14328,"date":"2013-09-24T02:09:46","date_gmt":"2013-09-24T01:09:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=14328"},"modified":"2013-09-24T02:09:46","modified_gmt":"2013-09-24T01:09:46","slug":"ear-to-the-ground","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2013\/09\/24\/ear-to-the-ground\/","title":{"rendered":"Ear to the Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ubu.com\/film\/vantieghem_ear.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tieghem.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/tieghem.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The name of percussionist David Van Tieghem won&#8217;t be familiar to most people, but if you&#8217;ve ever heard Eno &amp; Byrne&#8217;s <em>My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts<\/em>, <em>Speaking In Tongues<\/em> by Talking Heads, any of Laurie Anderson&#8217;s early albums or Steve Reich&#8217;s <em>Music For 18 Musicians<\/em> then you&#8217;ve heard some of Van Tieghem&#8217;s session work.<\/p>\n<p>For <em>Ear to the Ground<\/em>, a four-minute video piece by John Sanborn &amp; Kit Fitzgerald, Van Tieghem leaves the recording studio to play the city streets of New York: pavements, fences, doorways, etc. This may be a typical product of the NYC art crowd of the late 1970s but it also seems prescient for the way it predicts the urban percussion\/performance that would flourish a couple of years later in Europe, a micro-genre exemplified by Einst\u00fcrzende Neubauten, 23 Skidoo, Test Department, the Bow Gamelan Ensemble and others.
