Some cities suit this detailed bird&#8217;s-eye view more than others. A similar panorama of Prague wasn&#8217;t as interesting for me as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2013\/02\/25\/london-zoom\/\">view over London<\/a> which appeared at the beginning of this year. Tokyo from this vantage may be an endless clutter of concrete and tarmac but it still yields some interesting details.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tokyo02.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tokyo02.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tokyo&#8217;s Ginza district, and Chuo-dori Avenue, are locatable by these signs.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tokyo03.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tokyo03.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Further away there&#8217;s this cat-and-kitten sign.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tokyo04.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tokyo04.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While elsewhere Colonel Sanders proves inescapable. The Colonel&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonel_Sanders\" target=\"_blank\">Wikipedia entry <\/a>contains this, er&#8230;nugget:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball league has developed an urban legend of the &#8220;Curse of the Colonel&#8221;. A statue of Colonel Sanders was thrown into a river and lost during a 1985 fan celebration, and (according to the legend) the &#8220;curse&#8221; has caused Japan&#8217;s Hanshin Tigers to perform poorly since the incident.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tokyo05.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tokyo05.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tokyo06.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tokyo06.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In Gaspar No\u00e9&#8217;s <em>Enter The Void<\/em> (2009) we see some shots of a tiny graveyard in a Toyko backstreet. There are a couple of other cemeteries visible from the Tokyo Tower but this is the only one I could see like the one in the film, crammed into a tiny plot of land between buildings.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tokyo07.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tokyo07.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These are on a rooftop. PA system? Air-raid sirens?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tokyo08.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tokyo08.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"tokyo09.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/tokyo09.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Many of the buildings in central Toyko are very recent structures built in a modern style with no decorative or historical features. In most European cities, and many American ones, the sight of a mansard roof would be overlooked in favour of something more notable.
