That poor copy\u2014black-and-white, timecoded, multi-generation video\u2014has been circulating for years, so it&#8217;s good to know that the BFI will be <a href=\"http:\/\/filmstore.bfi.org.uk\/acatalog\/info_27232.html\" target=\"_blank\">releasing <em>Robin Redbreast<\/em> on DVD<\/a> in time for this year&#8217;s Halloween. This might be news enough but the following month the BFI also releases Leslie Megahey&#8217;s stunning adaptation of <a href=\"http:\/\/filmstore.bfi.org.uk\/acatalog\/info_27234.html\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Schalcken the Painter<\/em><\/a> in a dual DVD\/Blu-ray edition. I wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2012\/10\/27\/schalcken-the-painter\/\">a short review<\/a> of the latter film last October.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Mixes of the week: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/cafekaput.blogspot.co.uk\/2013\/08\/the-advisory-circle-present-august-sun.html\" target=\"_blank\">August Sun High<\/a><\/em> from The Advisory Circle, and <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/13022-john-wizards-quietus-mix-listen\" target=\"_blank\">John Wizards&#8217; Quietus Mix<\/a> &#8220;African music, R&amp;B and chamber pop, filtered through gentle electronic arrangements that cross-pollinate with South African house, Shangaan electro and dub&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 A trailer has surfaced for <em>The Counselor<\/em>, a film by Ridley Scott from an original screenplay by Cormac McCarthy. Trailers are too spoilerish so I&#8217;m refusing to watch it but for those interested <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/browbeat\/2013\/08\/07\/the_counselor_trailer_brad_pitt_michael_fassbender_and_javier_bardem_in.html\" target=\"_blank\">Slate<\/a> has the details.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Luckhurst makes an admirable attempt to link Lovecraft&#8217;s most frustrating writing tic to this theme of the unknown when he claims that Lovecraft&#8217;s &#8220;catachresis&#8221;\u2014deliberate muddling of language through the use of mixed metaphors and the like\u2014is a tool he uses to bolster the atmosphere of futility in the face of &#8220;absolute otherness.&#8221; The trauma of encountering something so far outside the realms of imagination triggers a collapse of logic in the language itself.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bookslut.com\/fiction\/2013_08_020233.php\" target=\"_blank\">Cate Fricke<\/a> reviews The Classic Horror Stories of HP Lovecraft, a collection from Oxford University Press edited by Roger Luckhurst.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;Contemporary audiences found it too weird, too wonky and even borderline distasteful&#8230;&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2013\/aug\/09\/canterbury-tale-michael-powell\" target=\"_blank\">Xan Brooks<\/a> goes looking for the locations from Powell &amp; Pressburger&#8217;s 1943 film, <em>A Canterbury Tale<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Two songs from Julia Holter&#8217;s forthcoming album, <em>Loud City Song<\/em>: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BmT7GKPsxto\" target=\"_blank\">World<\/a><\/em> and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7paoM2cghjI\" target=\"_blank\">Maxim&#8217;s I<\/a><\/em>.
