{"id":13982,"date":"2013-07-07T01:51:58","date_gmt":"2013-07-07T00:51:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=13982"},"modified":"2013-07-07T01:51:58","modified_gmt":"2013-07-07T00:51:58","slug":"weekend-links-167","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2013\/07\/07\/weekend-links-167\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend links 167"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"field.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/field.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Poster by Luke Insect &amp; Kenn Goodall.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In recent years I&#8217;ve had little patience for British cinema: too much dour &#8220;realism&#8221; with little of Alan Clarke&#8217;s vitality, too many comedies that aren&#8217;t funny, too many Hollywood calling cards, too much Colin Firth&#8230; So it&#8217;s been a pleasure to see Peter Strickland&#8217;s <em>Berberian Sound Studio<\/em> followed this month by Ben Wheatley&#8217;s <em>A Field In England<\/em>, a pair of films that stand out by daring to be different in a medium which seems to grow more creatively conservative with each passing year. <em>A Field In England<\/em> adds to the micro-genre of weird British films set around the time of the English Civil War. In place of witchfinders and devil worshippers we have magic, murder, madness, and a field of hallucinogenic mushrooms. Wheatley, like Strickland, takes risks that wouldn&#8217;t be allowed with a bigger budget which makes me excited to see what they&#8217;ll be doing next. <em>A Field In England<\/em> is already out on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviemail.com\/film\/dvd\/A-Field-in-England\/\" target=\"_blank\">DVD &amp; Blu-ray<\/a>. The trailer is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cRRvzjkzu2U\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. The director talked to <a href=\"http:\/\/thequietus.com\/articles\/12754-a-field-in-england-ben-wheatley-interview\" target=\"_blank\">Mat Colegate<\/a> about the genesis of the film (spoiler alert). There&#8217;s more big hats and cloaks in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviemail.com\/film-shop\/collection\/722-Top-10-17th-century-films\/\" target=\"_blank\">this list<\/a> of ten 17th century films.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 &#8220;I like to look at men\u2026the way they look at women,&#8221; photographer <a href=\"http:\/\/hyperallergic.com\/74459\/ancient-greek-crotch-shots-ingrid-berthon-moines-balls-nsfw\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ingrid Berthon-Moine<\/a> says about her pictures of sculpted testicles.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/entertainment-arts-23117197\" target=\"_blank\">Roger Dean has finally sued James Cameron<\/a> over the designs for <em>Avatar<\/em>.
