{"id":13696,"date":"2013-04-24T01:53:20","date_gmt":"2013-04-24T00:53:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/?p=13696"},"modified":"2013-04-24T05:44:14","modified_gmt":"2013-04-24T04:44:14","slug":"le-tarot-de-philippe-lemaire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2013\/04\/24\/le-tarot-de-philippe-lemaire\/","title":{"rendered":"Le Tarot de Philippe Lemaire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nouvellerevuemoderne.free.fr\/tarot.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"lemaire1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/lemaire1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Philippe Lemaire is French, and another engraving collage artist who I&#8217;d have to include in the list of post-Ernst practitioners if I ever get round to updating my <a href=\"http:\/\/strangeattractor.co.uk\/shoppe\/journal-two\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Strange Attractor<\/em><\/a> essay about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/2010\/11\/01\/wilfried-satty-artist-of-the-occult\/\">Wilfried S\u00e4tty<\/a>. Like Ernst and S\u00e4tty, Lemaire seems to use paper-and-scissors techniques, although S\u00e4tty also made use of print processes in order to duplicate the images he cut from old books, and also resize, flip or invert them. In this he&#8217;s the bridge between the original method of engraving collage and digital techniques.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/nouvellerevuemoderne.free.fr\/tarot.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"lemaire2.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.johncoulthart.com\/feuilleton\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/lemaire2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The examples here are from a small series of Tarot images on <a href=\"http:\/\/nouvellerevuemoderne.free.fr\/collage.htm\" target=\"_blank\">the artist&#8217;s website<\/a>, none of which are labelled so we&#8217;re left to guess the identity of what I presume are figures from the Major Arcana. The one above may be The Empress but the other two resist easy interpretation.
